Choosing Your Wedding Ceremony Songs...

wedding ceremony songs

After you have read through our wedding ceremony music guide, chosen a musical style, and picked an overall theme for your wedding, think about the wedding ceremony songs that you would like to hear. But don't just choose randomly! Keep the following considerations in mind:

1. Consult Your Ceremony Site and Officiant:

The wedding ceremony songs you choose may be limited by your ceremony site, so check with your wedding officiant before you begin planning. Many places of worship do not allow secular music and have restrictions on the songs played. This is especially true if you plan to have a Catholic Wedding Ceremony.

2. Chose Your Ceremony Music Style:

Consider your personal style as a couple. Are you more of a traditional Wagner’s Here Comes the Bride couple or a contemporary The Beatles All You Need Is Love? Do you want your guests to walk away thinking about how your ceremony was unlike any other they have been to? Remember that there may be several variations of the same song — such as contemporary versions of classical songs and vice versa. If you are looking for something a little different, check out the Vitamin String Quartet. They are a string quartet that does covers of popular music such as Nirvana and My Chemical Romance. For downloads and free samples, see Contemporary Wedding Music.

3. Choosing Your Songs:

Do your research and think of all the songs you like. Are there some songs that illustrate how you feel about each other as a couple? Consider the lyrics. Are there songs that you identify with each other? Think of the song that was playing the first time you kissed or the song that you first danced to on the night you met. Was a song playing during the proposal? Who are your favorite artists? Are there any songs from your favorite movies that you could use? The more thought you put into your song choices, the more personal your wedding - and this will show!

4. Consider Family Traditions and Customs:

Ask your parents, grandparents and relatives what songs were played at their weddings. Playing these songs can be a very touching tribute to people who are close to your heart. My parents had The Wedding Song by Paul Stookey sung at their wedding in 1978. To honor them, the same song was played on the piano during the Unity Candle lighting at my wedding ceremony.

Processional Wedding Songs
Songs played while you and your wedding party march down the aisle. Many couples choose a different processional song for the bride's march.

Interlude Wedding Songs
Songs played to accompany a tradition or a significant moment at your wedding ceremony, such as the lighting of a unity candle, signing of a ketubah, sand ceremony, or rose ceremony.

Recessional Wedding Songs
Songs played while you and your wedding party exit the ceremony. Recessional songs are generally lively and upbeat to reflect the joy and excitement of the newly pronounced marriage.

Postlude Wedding Songs
Songs played while your guests leave and/or while you greet guests. There are no strict rules regarding postlude songs, so many couples like to get creative.
